A Place Where Life Returns

Song of Solomon 2:11–12 says, “See! The winter has passed; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, and the cooing of doves is heard in our land.”

There is something deeply moving about the transformation that takes place on the earth during the spring season. Flowers that once seemed lifeless begin to bloom again. Brown grass turns vibrant green. Birds that went quiet in the winter begin to raise their voices, and the dark, cold days give way to light and warmth. Life returns. And I find this process to be similar to what takes place in many hearts of the women we serve at The WellHouse.

While I don’t work directly with residents in my role as Volunteer Coordinator, it is obvious that many of our women arrive with understandable apprehension – unsure if they can trust us, uncertain of what awaits them, and still emerging from the “winter” of their own experiences. Many show up with drooping heads, fearful faces, and quiet voices. But it’s only a matter of time before things begin to change. While the process of healing has its many challenges and while hard days absolutely still exist, the power of the Holy Spirit is undeniable here. Slowly but surely, transformation takes place. Hope awakens. Light returns to eyes. Laughter breaks out. Unconditional love enters in and shakes things up – like it always does. Even from my vantage point in an administrative role, I’ve seen these changes unfold with unmistakable clarity. The WellHouse is proof of God’s ability to bring dead things back to life.

One of my favorite parts of my job is witnessing how this transformation strengthens and encourages the faith of our volunteers as well. We currently have 16 regular, volunteer‑led classes offered to our women – many of which are led by multiple volunteers. It’s not uncommon for one of those volunteers to pull me aside and say, “She has come so far,” or “She’s just come to life these last few weeks.” They know that while the therapy, case management, recovery groups, and life skills are helping our women, only God can truly heal the wounds deep in our ladies’ hearts. It is an honor to work with our volunteers—walking alongside them as they pour out Christ’s love to the women here through their time, gifts, and presence. At The WellHouse, hope doesn’t just return to the women we serve; it spreads, multiplies, and touches every heart involved.
